There is no single “best snorkeling spot” that is perfect every day. Moorea’s lagoon contains several different environments, and each one offers a different experience.
These environments include:
- coral gardens, filled with tropical fish and varied coral formations;
- sandy areas, where stingrays are often found;
- areas close to the reef, visited by many different marine species;
- shallow water, often suitable for guests discovering snorkeling for the first time;
- deeper areas, where sea turtles may sometimes be observed;

A coral garden may be spectacular one day and less enjoyable the next. The light changes, the swell develops, visibility varies and marine animals move freely.
The most beautiful snorkeling site is therefore not always the place we originally planned to visit. It is often the location that the day’s conditions allow us to explore at its best.

Marine animals you may encounter in the lagoon
While snorkeling in Moorea’s lagoon, it may be possible to encounter:

- blacktip reef sharks;
- sea turtles;

- and sometimes dolphins, particularly around some of the passes.

What is the best time for snorkeling in Moorea?
There is no time of day that is always better for snorkeling in Moorea.
The morning light can be especially beautiful, particularly during the period when the days are shorter. However, this does not necessarily mean that underwater visibility will be better.
The clarity of the water depends mainly on sea conditions.
A strong swell can push more water into the lagoon and stir up sand, sediment and fine particles. The water may then become less clear, even under a perfectly blue sky.
By contrast, when the ocean is calm and the particles have had time to settle, visibility can be exceptional.
The dry and wet seasons still exist, but they are now less predictable and sometimes less clearly defined. It is therefore more useful to consider the conditions on the day than to rely only on the season.

Many travelers ask us whether snorkeling is better at high tide or low tide.
In Moorea, this question has very little practical importance.
French Polynesia lies in what is known as an amphidromic region, where the tidal range is very small.
Small variations in sea level do occur, but there is no strongly marked alternation between high and low tide like the one found in many parts of Europe and elsewhere in the world.
In practice, underwater visibility depends much more on:
- the ocean swell;
- the wind;
- the light;
- particles suspended in the water;
- and the overall sea conditions on the day.
That is why we mainly observe the condition of the lagoon and the ocean rather than relying on a tide chart.

Many visitors believe that the morning is automatically the best time for snorkeling in Moorea.
In reality, there is no absolute rule.
Afternoon tours often have a very enjoyable advantage: there are generally fewer boats at the snorkeling sites. Some places may then feel almost deserted, giving you the impression that the lagoon belongs entirely to you.
A very early departure around sunrise can also provide an especially peaceful experience.
Because our excursions are completely private, we can consider special requests and adapt the departure time or itinerary when our availability and navigation conditions allow it.
The best time therefore depends mainly on what you are looking for: more light, fewer visitors or a schedule that fits comfortably with the rest of your stay.

Can you safely swim with sharks in Moorea?
Reef sharks remain wild animals. Like any wild animal, they should be observed with caution and respect.
It would not be accurate to claim that a shark can never present any danger.
However, they can be observed under appropriate conditions when safety instructions are followed and their natural behavior is not changed.
Feeding sharks, often referred to as shark feeding, is prohibited.
Our company does not feed marine animals or try to attract them artificially. We look for them in their natural environment without changing their behavior.
The aim is to allow a respectful observation, not to provoke an interaction.
When entering the water, participants should:
- remain calm;
- avoid sudden movements;
- not chase the animals;
- not attempt to touch them;
- follow the instructions provided on board.
A shark that wishes to move away must always be able to do so freely.
What equipment should you bring for snorkeling?
To enjoy Moorea’s lagoon comfortably, we recommend bringing:
- a mask that fits your face correctly;
- a snorkel;
- comfortable fins;
- a towel;
- a rash guard or UV-protective shirt;
- sun protection suitable for the marine environment;
- protection from rain and sea spray;
- water;
- a waterproof camera if you would like to take photographs.
Well-fitting equipment greatly improves your comfort in the water.
A leaking mask, an incorrectly positioned snorkel or fins that are too large can quickly make the experience less enjoyable.
Flotation aids can be used by guests who would feel more comfortable with additional support in the water.
You do not need to be an athletic swimmer, but you should be comfortable enough to use your mask, snorkel and fins.
Why explore Moorea’s lagoon by boat?
Some snorkeling sites can be reached from the beaches, but a boat makes it much easier to visit several different environments during the same excursion.
We do not always begin a tour knowing exactly where we will go.
Conditions can change: the swell develops, the light transforms a coral garden, one site becomes busier or visibility improves in another part of the lagoon.
For this reason, a completely fixed itinerary does not always make sense.
Exploring by boat allows us to adapt the route according to:
- wind and swell conditions;
- underwater visibility;
- the presence of other boats;
- the preferences and swimming ability of the participants;
- the wildlife observed during the excursion;
- the behavior of the animals.
When a turtle dives close to a coral area, we do not try to chase it with the boat.
We can place the engine in neutral, maintain a respectful distance and wait. The turtle may surface to breathe nearby a few minutes later.
Patience often creates a calmer and more natural encounter than repeatedly pursuing an animal.
