Every year, between July and November, the waters of Moorea host one of French Polynesia's most extraordinary natural spectacles: the arrival of humpback whales.

These ocean giants travel several thousand kilometers from the cold waters of the Antarctic to reach the tropical waters of Polynesia. Their goal is simple: to reproduce, sing, mate, and give birth to their calves in warm, protected waters.

Observing these majestic animals around Moorea is already an incredible experience... but Polynesia offers something even rarer.

It is one of the few places in the world where it is possible to observe whales directly in the water.

An Exceptional Encounter: Swimming with Whales in Moorea

French Polynesia is one of the very few places on the planet where entering the water with humpback whales is permitted.

This activity is strictly regulated by the DIREN (Environmental Directorate of French Polynesia) to ensure the safety of both animals and visitors.

The rules are very precise:

- regulated approach distance

- limited number of swimmers in the water

- respectful observation of whale behavior

- mandatory guide to supervise the activity

Thanks to these strict rules, it is sometimes possible to experience an unforgettable in-water encounter with a whale.

For many travelers, this experience is often described as the encounter of a lifetime.

Humpback Whale Migration

Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) undertake one of the longest migrations of all marine mammals.

Each year, they leave the Antarctic, where they feed during the austral summer, to reach the warm waters of Polynesia.

This migration can cover more than 5,000 kilometers.

Whales come to Moorea's waters to:

- mate

- give birth

- raise their calves during their first weeks of life

After the breeding season, they return to the rich feeding grounds of the Antarctic.

Size and Characteristics of Humpback Whales

Humpback whales are among the most impressive marine animals.

Main characteristics:

- length: 12 to 16 meters

- weight: 25 to 35 tons

- long pectoral fins up to 5 meters

- life expectancy: about 50 years

Each whale also has a unique fluke, which allows scientists to identify them like a fingerprint.

The Fascinating Songs of Whales

Male humpback whales are famous for their complex songs.

These songs can last several minutes and be repeated for hours.

The exact role of the song is not fully understood, but scientists believe it serves to:

- attract females

- communicate between males

- assert presence in a breeding area

When in the water near a singing whale, it is sometimes possible to hear or even feel these underwater vibrations.

The Spectacular Leaps of Whales

Humpback whales are also known for their impressive leaps out of the water, called breaching.

Seeing a 30-ton animal completely emerge from the water is one of the most impressive natural sights one can witness at sea.

These jumps can be used to:

- communicate

- remove parasites

- interact with other whales

Around Moorea, these jumps can sometimes be observed from the boat.

Females and Calves

During whale season, it is common to observe females accompanied by their calves.

After a gestation of approximately 11 to 12 months, the calf is born in tropical waters.

At birth:

- it measures approximately 4 to 5 meters

- it weighs nearly one ton

During the first weeks of its life, the mother stays constantly by its side to protect it and help it learn to swim and breathe.

These moments are among the most moving observations one can experience at sea.

A Unique Experience in the World

Seeing whales around Moorea is already exceptional.
But being able to enter the water and observe them in their natural environment is an even rarer experience.

Thanks to the strict regulations in place in French Polynesia, these encounters remain respectful of the animals and their habitat.

For many travelers, swimming with a whale in the Pacific Ocean remains one of the most profound moments of a lifetime.
